Lyttelton is a historic port town on a volcanic harbour, separated from Christchurch by the Port Hills and linked to the city by a road tunnel. It's a working harbour with a creative, village feel - boutique shops and cafes along London Street, a lively Saturday farmers market, and the reconstructed Timeball Station tower on the hillside. Most cruise visitors use it as the gateway to Christchurch, New Zealand's rebuilt 'Garden City,' with its Botanic Gardens, heritage tram, punting on the Avon, Cardboard Cathedral and the International Antarctic Centre.
Lyttelton is Christchurch's working harbour, tucked into a volcanic bay just over the Port Hills from the city. Cruise ships tie up at New Zealand's first purpose-built cruise berth, opened in 2020 to bring big ships back after the 2011 earthquakes. From the berth a short tunnel drive of about twenty minutes reaches central Christchurch, while a free shuttle drops passengers in the characterful port village itself, beneath the Christchurch Gondola on the hills above.
BERTH port. Lyttelton has New Zealand's first purpose-built cruise berth at Cashin Quay, completed in 2020. Passengers walk off (no tenders).
Central Christchurch is ~12 km / ~15-20 min via the Lyttelton road tunnel. Cruise-line shuttles run from the berth into the city (~NZ$8-15 return), dropping at the Bridge of Remembrance on Cashel Street. A free shuttle from the berth drops on Norwich Quay in Lyttelton village (also the pick-up point for tours, taxis and family). Metro bus route 8 'Port to Port' links Lyttelton with the CBD and airport.
Lyttelton village (Norwich Quay / London Street) has cafes and groceries; it's a small community, so most passengers head to Christchurch for major attractions.
Lyttelton village has cafes, boutique shops, groceries and an i-Centre; volunteer 'Local Champions' staff the Christchurch shuttle drop-off.
October to April. Recent seasons have seen around 60 ship calls.
Shuttles link the berth to Christchurch (Cashel St) and to Lyttelton village (Norwich Quay); the #8 bus and the Gondola shuttle serve the hills. In the city, the heritage Tram is the easiest way to connect central sights.
Currency is the NZD; driving is on the left. Note the ChristChurch Cathedral in Cathedral Square remains closed / under rebuild, and Canterbury Museum is closed for redevelopment (Quake City runs separately).
