A Conservation Amendment Bill has passed its first reading, paving the way for international-visitor access charges at four crown-jewel sites — Milford Sound, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Cathedral Cove and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Charges are expected between $20 and $50 per person, NZ residents exempt; revenue is earmarked for conservation and visitor facilities.
